In 2018, after years of asking him, Gavin finally said yes. It was to a little electro-pop song I’d written, and he said it was right up his alley. When we met to go over the song I was so nervous, but Gavin arrived with a fully formed Garage Band version of the song he’d made overnight. He’d written harmonies and background call-and-response vocals. He just decided to do that, because he wanted to, because he loved to collaborate, and make things with other people.

I couldn’t believe the time he took. I couldn’t believe he said yes. I can’t believe he’s gone, and reading all the stories everyone has shared it’s clear just how many lives he touched.

The song had an existential lyric: you and the one(s) you love, dancing together in a space where “nothing’s going to matter as much as this will.”

“From the dark, we have moved along
Making our tiny part —
Our measure
In the last love song.”

Leave it to Gavin Creel to leave behind a measure that is truly immeasurable.

‘Twas a beautiful day for one and all

A few years ago, I had a casual convo with a stran

A few years ago, I had a casual convo with a stranger from Alabama. We discussed our interests in musical theatre and especially in Shirley Jackson. Eventually, this stranger became a wonderful friend, @chels_bells1, and she and @samfordarts commissioned an original musical.

I suppose you could call this show my “pandemic” show. Processing isolation, fear of the future, and hope for the young people who have been handed a chaotic world by the older generation. Thinking about what it means when we combine our beliefs for a righteous cause, and what it means when we combine our hatred at forces we don’t understand. Thirteen characters and one tiny, doomed island later, TOMORROW, THE ISLAND DIES premiered in Birmingham, Alabama for four beautiful performances, captured here by my love, @murphymade .

The island of Haverness, Maine is dead, as it has died a few times before (thank you @mmctheatrearts), but here’s to the next time she rises from the waves again.
