From Waimea to New York

Aloha...! Some yet-to-be-determined RSO music is slated to be presented this July in the Hawaii Performing Arts Festival in Waimea, Hawaii. The proposed program will be taught by composer Ricky Ian Gordon (My Life With Albertine, Dream True) and classical mezzo-soprano Juliana Gondek, and intends to feature music by Gordon, Jason Robert Brown (Parade, Songs for a New World), Adam Guettel (Light in the Piazza), Frankel/Korie (Grey Gardens), John Bucchino (Lavender Girl) and oft-RSO collaborator B.T. Ryback. More info to come!

Upcoming: the new teen musical, Error: Connection Lost, for which RSO was commissioned to provide music and lyrics, will make its premiere at the Museo del Barrio in Manhattan on May 15th, 2007 and will run for four performances, followed by a city-wide tour. The piece, which centers around important issues affecting today's teenagers, is produced by the national organization CITY AT PEACE NEW YORK, and will be directed by Jeff Flowers.

Goodspeed Musicals presents new song from upcoming Guenther/Oliver musical
On Friday, February 2, nationally acclaimed Goodspeed Musicals presented the song “Getaway” from the musical Alive at Ten (book by Kirsten Guenther, music and lyrics by RSO) in a showcase of work by emerging writers from NYU-Tisch.  The song was performed by Zachary Halley (Flyer the Musical).
 
Alive at Ten is currently in progress and will be presented as a reading on April 3, 2007 at the Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program (where the musical is also being developed).  Directors and cast will be announced in the upcoming months.

EVER AFTER
receives first reading

Zina Goldrich and Marcy Heisler present a closed reading of their new musical Ever After, for which RSO provided musical assistance (aka, copywork).  Even in its earliest stage, the show already looks to be fantastic!  The reading featured Aaron Lazaar, Jen Gambatese, Mary Beth Peil, Erin Davie, and musical direction by Kim Grigsby.

Bill Finn to present RSO song at Barrington Stages

On September 1 and 2, 2006, Bill Finn will present a cabaret entitled “Songs by Ridiculously Talented Composers and Lyricists You Probably Don’t Know but Should” at Barrington Stages (home of the original 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee).  Bill has selected the song “The Plane is Going Down” (Music by Eric Day) for the event…  Performers to be announced.  RSO says, “T-H-A-N-K-S Bill!”

To finish out 2006 RSO will be doing music assistant work for Zina Goldrich (of Goldrich and Heisler, the team who brought you “The Alto’s Lament” and “Taylor the Latte Boy”) on Ever After, produced by Adam Epstein (prod., Hairspray).

A “Musical” Success

On August 3 and 4, A Long Time Ago in a Musical Far, Far Away (written and directed by RSO)was presented by the GATE Summer Musical Theatre Program.  The show was a humongous success, bringing in almost $10,000 in donations, receiving diligent coverage by numerous SoCal newspapers, and frequent telecasts on Pasadena’s public access KLRN.  Find out more about the show and the program here.
